Key facts (as of 29 October 2026)
- Liquidity: about US$92bn of USDT sits on Tron and US$72bn on Ethereum; about US$44bn of USDC sits on Ethereum, followed by Hyperliquid L1 and Solana (about US$7bn each) and Base (about US$4bn) (DefiLlama, 29 October 2026).
- Fees: on 19 October 2026 a USDT transfer cost about US$0.0005 on Solana, US$0.0054 on Ethereum and about US$2.24 on Tron for a wallet without staked energy (Cryptsy Transfer Cost Index, via edgeX). A single-day snapshot.
- Finality: Ethereum about 15 minutes; Tron solidifies in about a minute; Solana's Alpenglow upgrade, live on 21 October 2026, targets about 150 ms (Solana Foundation).
- Card networks: Visa's US USDC settlement started on Solana on 16 December 2025; card programmes from Marqeta and Coinbase settle on Base (Visa; Equity Ledger).
The short answer
There is no best chain. There is the chain your counterparties use, that your custody and screening tools cover well, at a cost and speed you can live with. Most firms end up supporting two or three.
Comparison
| Factor | Tron | Ethereum | Solana | Base |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Main stablecoin | USDT | USDT and USDC | USDC | USDC |
| Who uses it | Emerging-market users, OTC desks, exchanges | Institutions, DeFi, regulated firms | Payments, card settlement, consumer apps | Card programmes, consumer apps |
| Fee level (19 Oct 2026) | High without staked energy | Low on that day; rises with demand | Very low | Low |
| Finality | ≈ 1 minute | ≈ 15 minutes | ≈ 150 ms target | Depends on Ethereum for final settlement |
| Fee mechanics | Energy and bandwidth; stake TRX or rent energy | Gas in ETH | SOL fees; rent for new token accounts (≈ 0.002 SOL) | Gas in ETH on layer 2 |
| Analytics coverage | Broad among major vendors | Broadest | Broad | Broad |

A scoring method
flowchart LR
A[List counterparties and their chains] --> B[Weight factors]
B --> C[Score each chain 1-5]
C --> D[Shortlist top two or three]
D --> E[Test with small transfers]
E --> F[Write chain matrix and confirmation policy]Suggested weights, to adjust to your business:
| Factor | Weight |
|---|---|
| Counterparty coverage | 30% |
| Off-ramp and liquidity | 20% |
| Compliance tooling coverage | 15% |
| Cost per transfer at your volume | 15% |
| Finality and reliability | 10% |
| Operational complexity | 10% |
Illustrative example: a scoring matrix
Illustrative example. Scores and weights are invented to show the method.
| Factor (weight) | Tron | Ethereum | Solana |
|---|---|---|---|
| Counterparty coverage (30%) | 5 | 4 | 3 |
| Off-ramp and liquidity (20%) | 4 | 5 | 4 |
| Compliance tooling (15%) | 4 | 5 | 4 |
| Cost (15%) | 2 | 3 | 5 |
| Finality (10%) | 4 | 3 | 5 |
| Operations (10%) | 3 | 4 | 4 |
| Weighted score | 3.9 | 4.1 | 3.95 |
The result is close, which is typical. This firm supports Ethereum and Tron for supplier payments and adds Solana for high-volume small payouts.
WarningSending on the wrong network is one of the commonest costly mistakes. Write a chain matrix for every counterparty, whitelist addresses per chain and test new routes with small amounts.
Operational points by chain
| Chain | What to plan for |
|---|---|
| Tron | Stake TRX or rent energy to control fees; monitor resource balances |
| Ethereum | Fee caps and batching; a fallback chain in busy periods |
| Solana | Token account creation for new recipients; RPC reliability |
| Base and other layer 2s | Bridging and withdrawal times to Ethereum; native vs bridged tokens |
Timeline
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| September 2022 | Ethereum moves to proof of stake |
| 16 Dec 2025 | Visa launches US USDC settlement on Solana |
| 19 Oct 2026 | Transfer cost snapshot (Cryptsy) |
| 21 Oct 2026 | Solana Alpenglow goes live |
Q/A
Should we only accept one chain?
It is simpler but may push conversion costs onto counterparties. Many firms support two.
Is bridged USDC the same as native USDC?
No. Native USDC is issued by Circle on that chain. Bridged versions depend on the bridge.
Does the issuer's freeze ability vary by chain?
Major issuers can freeze on the chains they support natively. Check each issuer's terms.
How do we handle Tron fees?
Stake or rent energy, and batch payouts where possible.
