Key facts (as of 29 October 2026)
- Visa Direct: stablecoin prefunding and payout pilots began in 2025. In October 2026 Visa announced commercial production, with Inyo Global as the first enabler. Inyo clients can prefund cross-border payouts with USDC "in near real time, rather than relying solely on traditional funding windows".
- Reach: Inyo's platform sends payouts across more than 180 countries through Visa Direct (Visa).
- Mastercard: Mastercard and BVNK launched Global Money Platform on 15 October 2026. It combines fiat and stablecoin accounts, conversion, stablecoin-linked cards and local bank payouts through Mastercard Move (Equity Ledger, citing Mastercard).
- Remittance: on 21 October 2026 Western Union selected Noah to settle Receiver Redirect payouts in USDPT (Equity Ledger). No launch date was given.
Why businesses prefund
A payout provider, such as a remittance operator, a PSP paying merchants or an iGaming operator paying players, often needs money already in place in the destination market or with its payout partner. That lets it pay instantly while its own incoming funds are still in transit. Prefunding covers the gap between:
- when the payout must happen, often instantly and around the clock
- when funding arrives, which depends on bank cut-off times, correspondent chains, weekends and holidays
| Business | Who it prefunds | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Remittance operator | Payout partners in receive countries | Partners pay recipients only from funds they already hold |
| PSP or payout platform | Card push-payment programme, local banks | Instant payouts to cards and accounts |
| iGaming operator | Payment providers handling withdrawals | Fast withdrawals are a player expectation |
| Marketplace platform | Payout providers in many countries | Mass payouts on a fixed schedule |
The costs
| Cost | Description |
|---|---|
| Trapped capital | Balances sitting idle in many corridors and partners |
| Forecasting error | Too little causes failed payouts; too much wastes capital |
| Counterparty exposure | Funds held at a partner are exposed to that partner's failure |
| FX timing | Converting ahead of need locks in rates early |
| Weekend gaps | Bank rails close while demand does not |

P->>R: Pays from smaller bufferHow stablecoins change it
Stablecoins run around the clock and settle in minutes on most networks. A business can top up a payout partner just in time instead of holding large buffers days in advance. This is the use case Visa describes.
| Traditional prefunding | Stablecoin prefunding | |
|---|---|---|
| Funding window | Banking hours and cut-offs | 24/7 |
| Buffer size | Sized for days of payouts | Can be smaller, sized for hours |
| Visibility | Bank statements, often delayed | On-chain, near real time |
| Final leg | Local bank or card rail | Still a local bank or card rail in most cases |
| New dependency | Correspondent banks | Ramp provider, issuer and chain |
NoteStablecoin prefunding changes the funding leg, not necessarily the payout leg. Recipients usually still get local currency through bank, card or wallet rails.
WarningSmaller buffers depend on reliable on- and off-ramp access. If the ramp or the stablecoin itself is disrupted, a thin buffer runs out faster. See Reserves, redemption and depeg risk.
Sizing a buffer
A practical method:
- Measure peak payout volume per hour for each corridor and day of the week.
- Measure how long a top-up takes end to end, including screening and the partner's crediting.
- Set the buffer to cover peak volume over that top-up time, plus a margin for incidents.
- Keep a fallback: a bank wire route and a second stablecoin or chain.
- Review monthly and after any incident.
Illustrative example: weekend payouts
Illustrative example. The figures are invented.
A PSP pays affiliates and merchants US$4m over a typical weekend through a payout partner. With wires only, it sends US$5m every Thursday to cover Friday evening to Monday morning. With USDC top-ups that the partner credits within an hour, the PSP keeps US$1m at the partner and tops up in US$500,000 tranches when the balance falls below US$600,000. Average balance at the partner drops by about US$3m. Counterparty exposure falls by the same amount.

Q/A
Does stablecoin prefunding remove the need for a payout partner?
No. Partners still hold the licences, local rails and compliance for the final leg.
Is prefunding the same as a rolling reserve?
No. A rolling reserve is money an acquirer holds back from a merchant against risk. Prefunding is money a business sends ahead so it can pay out.
Does the partner need to accept stablecoins itself?
Not always. A licensed provider can convert and credit the partner's fiat account, but that adds a step and its hours.
What is the main risk of thin buffers?
A failed top-up during a peak. Keep fallbacks and alerts.
Does prefunding count as customer money?
It depends on the structure and licences. Funds held for onward payment may be safeguarded client money. Take advice.
Which stablecoin should I prefund with?
The one your partner and your ramp support in your licensed markets. See USDT vs USDC vs PYUSD vs EURC.
